Lost Circulation Materials

Naturally occurring, platy silicate mineral, ground and sized as a lost-circulation material (LCM). Flat, plate-like particles bridge across pore throats and micro-fractures in the formation face, physically blocking whole-mud loss into fractured, vugular, or highly permeable zones.

Ground agricultural byproduct (walnut or groundnut shell), sized and graded as an LCM. Fibrous, resilient particles bridge and pack into fracture faces, providing mechanical plugging that resists erosion under continued mud circulation better than brittle mineral LCM.

Crystalline carbon with a lamellar (layered) structure - natural (mined) or artificial/synthetic. The layered crystal structure allows sheets to slide over one another, providing a solid lubricant film at the bit and bottom-hole-assembly/well-bore interface.

Regenerated cellulose film, shredded or flaked for use as an LCM. Thin, flexible, highly conformable flakes deform and pack into fracture faces, sealing lost-circulation zones. Being cellulose, it eventually biodegrades, reducing long-term formation-damage risk relative to permanent mineral LCM.

Ground natural limestone or precipitated CaCO3, used as a weighting/bridging agent. Provides moderate density and fine bridging/fluid-loss control; critically, it is fully soluble in mild acid (HCl), so any filter cake or bridging solids it forms can be dissolved and removed on demand.

Surfactant/polymeric additives designed to interact with asphaltene aggregates in crude oil. Adsorb onto asphaltene aggregates, sterically and electrostatically preventing them from flocculating and precipitating out of solution as pressure, temperature, or composition changes during production and transport.

An inorganic alkaline silicate solution that provides shale and wellbore stabilization by forming a silica gel on contact with formation brine.

A biodegradable fibrous LCM alternative to walnut shells, offering similar bridging mechanics from a plant-cellulose feedstock rather than a nut byproduct.

A custom particle-size-distribution LCM pill, engineered and blended (often combining calcium carbonate, mica, and fiber) to match a specific estimated fracture width using particle-packing design principles.

A modern total-loss remedy using a polymer system that expands or cross-links on contact with water, sealing large fractures, vugs, or cavernous zones that defeat conventional particulate LCM.

A classic total-loss remedy where bentonite is slurried in diesel oil to prevent premature hydration, then pumped into the loss zone, where it contacts formation water and rapidly hydrates into a stiff, hard-to-circulate plug.

The acid-removable weighting and bridging agent specifically valuable for productive-zone drilling, where the operator needs a guaranteed way to remove the material after completion without permanent formation damage.

Graded, particle-sized salt used as a bridging and weighting component specifically in saturated salt-system drilling.

Cellulose-based noninvasive lost circulation material and wellbore stabilising additive, supplied in four graded cuts. Deformable particles wedge into pore throats and fracture faces to form a compressible surface seal rather than a thick filter cake, so mud rheology is left alone and return permeability is preserved. Fine grades run continuously in the active system to prevent seepage and stabilise weak formations; coarse grades are spotted as pills to cure losses already underway.
