Sulphonated Asphalt
PZT-SULA-1 sulphonated asphalt is a sulfonated, chemically modified bituminous material related to gilsonite/natural asphaltite chemistry. It plates out over exposed shale surfaces and micro-fractures, sealing them and reducing water invasion into reactive shale, while also improving lubricity and contributing minor fluid-loss control at elevated temperature. Works in both water-based and oil-based mud systems - unlike most inhibitive chemistries, which are system-specific - and remains effective at bottom-hole temperatures where many polymers degrade.
