Potassium Hydroxide

PZT-KOH-1 is a strong alkaline base used as a pH control agent in water-based drilling fluids. It is particularly useful in potassium-based systems, where it does two jobs at once: raising and holding alkalinity, and supplying potassium ions that support shale inhibition. That dual role is the reason to reach for caustic potash rather than caustic soda in a KCl-polymer mud. Typical treatment is 0.1 to 1.0 lb/bbl (0.3 to 2.9 kg/m3), added slowly to reach and hold the target pH, with the exact dose set by the system’s buffering capacity rather than a fixed rate. Dissolution is strongly exothermic, so it must be added gradually with proper PPE. Supplied in 25 kg multi-wall bags.

Use Cases & Applications
  • pH and alkalinity control in water-based drilling fluids
  • Potassium-based mud systems needing both alkalinity and a K+ source
  • Maintaining pH where polymer stability depends on a controlled alkaline window
Pros
  • Supplies alkalinity and potassium ions from a single additive in K-based systems
  • Highly soluble, so it works into the system quickly
  • Commercial-grade 90% minimum assay gives predictable dosing
Cons & Limitations
  • Dissolution is strongly exothermic: add slowly, and treat heat generation as a handling hazard
  • Strongly caustic - full PPE and eye protection required
  • Overtreatment drives pH past the useful window and can destabilise some polymers
