PZT-BAR-1 baryte (barium sulfate, BaSO4) is a natural, very high specific-gravity, chemically inert mineral. It is ground to a controlled particle size and added to drilling mud purely to increase mud density, which raises hydrostatic pressure in the wellbore to control formation pressure and prevent kicks or blowouts. The industry-standard, most cost-effective way to achieve high mud weights, and chemically inert when properly sized and free of soluble contaminants - it doesn't interfere with other additive chemistry, making it the primary weighting agent across the great majority of deep and high-pressure well drilling programs.
