Caustic Soda

PZT-CS-1 caustic soda (sodium hydroxide, NaOH) is a strong inorganic base that raises mud pH, converts bicarbonate contamination to carbonate, activates certain pH-sensitive polymers, and inhibits bacterial activity and corrosion, both of which are favored by low pH. Cheap, fast-acting, and needed in essentially every water-based mud program, small treatment volumes produce large, controllable pH swings, making it one of the most fundamental and non-substitutable additives in any WBM system.

Use Cases & Applications
  • Universal pH control across virtually all WBM systems
  • Treating out CO2/bicarbonate contamination
  • Helping solubilize and disperse certain deflocculants
Pros
  • Low cost for the function delivered
  • Reduces H2S solubility/surface toxicity risk by raising pH
  • Essential, non-substitutable role in the system
Cons & Limitations
  • Highly corrosive to handle - requires PPE and careful, incremental dosing to avoid overshoot
  • Subject to federal Superfund chemical excise tax on import (one of 42 listed chemicals)
  • Excess caustic at high temperature can accelerate hydrolytic degradation of some polymers, including PHPA
